The Stand

Yet another Stephen King book for this update, one that is fresh in my memory,  and one of the books I will remember my entire life.

The Stand cover.jpgThe Stand is the ultimate fight between good and evil, happening in a post-apocalyptic America, after a horrible disease known as Captain Trips, made by the American government,  have plagued the earth. You are introduced to some people that were immune to this disease, which some you follow through the entire Epic. Yes, this is no ordinary book, it's 1300 pages of Epic writing. Of course, with good comes evil, and  evil often seems to be more powerful than the forces of light. Much of the book is dedicated to telling about what happens before, during and shortly after the plague strikes, but no one can give such life to a couple of people walking as Stephen King can. Definitely worth reading, the Stand should be in the shelf of any fantasy and/or apocalypse fans. Biblical stories is also something I'm not a fan of, but God seems reasonable (however just as unintelligable as usually) in the book. As with other Stephen King books, you live in the story, you would want this apocalypse to happen just to be there, in the company of Larry the Rockstar, Tom the loveable retard, Stu, Frannie and all the others from the Boulder Free Zone. So the good folks are all trying to make society work again, while the forces of Dark and Evil are of course preparing for something else entirely. But even in the end, you start to like some of the bad guys; get sympathetic with them. Well, maybe not the antagonist which is more like an anti-christ but you get the deal.

I will not spoil anything else from the book, but if you are interested a plot summary from Wikipedia can be found here.

It exists a small series of TV episodes featuring the Stand, but I have not seen those. It lasts for 11 hours as far as I'm aware of anyway.

The Stand deserves its title of an Epic, though it might be a little slow to read at certain points. So I rate the Stand 5 out of 6 possible stars, and reccomends it to everyone.

Trailer!

I just released a trailer of future and present books that is/will be featured on the blog.
You can see it on YouTube or here! And share with friends & family :)

Time has come to write about the first book in the most epic fantasy series written ever, The Dark Tower by Stephen King.

The man in black fled through the desert, and the Gunslinger followed is the first line in Stephen King's epic series of Roland Deschain the Gunslinger. Annoyingly, describing the series is a very hard task because it do really happen loads of stuff, even while Roland is simply walking through a desert. Basicly, it's Stephen's amazing writing style that makes the entire book what it is. From the first sentence to the last, you are completely caught in this amazing book (and series for that matter), and you wish to follow Roland to the end of the world (which basicly is his great quest anyway). The heartless Gunslinger has been changed though, the old Roland was brutal, but a revised version of the book came in 2003. Roland is still the same badass as before, but there are some minor details (Revised version changes can be read HERE, Warning, spoiler alert). Roland meets several people on his journey through the desert, some of which has a lot to do with the rest of the series (which means you should not by any means skip to book number 2). The book is in my opinion not only a novel, but a piece of art that can and should be enjoyed by anyone. If there is a book museum or will be one, this book should have Mona Lisa's spot so that everyone could see it. But back on topic: Roland Deschain tries to find answers. What answers he look for we do not (yet) know, but he knows he can find them in the place he calls the Dark Tower. His journey takes us through his world, our world and lots of other worlds unrecognizable by anyone. With the Dark Tower, Stephen King gives proof that he is the great author we know him as.

I will not spoil anything else from the series, but if you are interested a plot summary from Wikipedia can be found here.

The Gunslinger is coming to the movies seventeenth of May 2012.

The Gunsligner is in my own opinion the best book I have ever read, and the best novel Stephen King has ever written. I give it the best of scores, 6 out of 6 possible stars.

And don't despair just because the first book is short, it's merely a introduction.

If you are interested, you can buy The Gunslinger on Amazon in paperback or for a Kindle.

The Amulet of Samarkand

If you want me to feature a book of your chosing, write a comment or email me here.

In the Amulet of Samarkand you follow Nathaniel, a apprentice magician. Though the world might be somewhat like ours, magicians are common; djinns and other demons are summoned and used in different situations.

As a 10 year old, Nathaniel is humiliated by the older wizard Simon Lovelace, and later on he teaches himself the ways of summoning through the books of Mr. Underwood, the man that adopted him while little.

To get his revenge upon Lovelace, Nathaniel summons the djinn Bartimaeus, a 5000 year old djinn that previously had a master in old Egypt. Events occur that does not go the way Nathaniel wants them too, for example that Bartimaeus does not wish to help his new master.
The Amulet of Samarkand is a very entertaining fantasy book for young adults, and it has sequels, The Golem’s Eye and Ptolemys gate which both might be featured later in this blog.

I recommend everyone to read the whole series, as it is well written and entertaining.

Jonathan Stroud have written several books, and he should have pusblished book number 4 in 2010 which did not occur as far as I know and can find out.

A full plot summary of the book can be found here.

I will rate the Amulet of Samarkand 4 out of 6 possible stars.

Carrie

So I finally made myself start writing on the blog. My first review will be the book Carrie by Stephen King.

Carrie

Carrie White is a small girl that is not very popular at school. Her mother is a crazy and very abusive christian and (mostly) due to this all her classmates take every possible oportunity to make her feel worse. I will give one specific example from the book; when Carrie has her first period. She has no idea of what is going on, and thinks she is about to die. Her classmates which should help her or tell her what is going on, instead uses this as a oportunity to harass her more. King has written the book in such way, you do know that when Carrie slowly starts to feel better in the end, you can at the same time feel something is about to happen. You have this feeling pretty much through the entire book. Sadly for Carries classmates, her mom and pretty much everyone else in her town is unaware of Carries potential when enough finally is enough.

I will not spoil more, but if you are interested a plot summary can be found here.

Carrie has been made into a movie. I have not seen it, but I've heard it is one of the best films based upon Stephen King's books (after seeing The Mist I don't find this hard to believe). Link to the film on Wikipedia is here.

Stephen King started his career with this book, which I recommend all Fantasy fans to read. It is also a very nice introduction to Stephen King's books in general. Carrie is a easy read, and before engaging some of his greater works, reading Carrie is a good idea.

I will rate Carrie 4.5 out of 6 stars.

Other Information about Carrie:
Author: Stephen King
Country: United States
Language: English

Genre(s): Horror, epistolary novel
Publisher: Doubleday
Publication date: April 5, 1974
Pages: 253

The Fantasy Guide

Even though I just created this, the layout is kinda horrible and I'm tired as hell, I'm going to introduce you to my new blog.

It's called the Fantasy Guide, and that's because I'm going to review fantasy, sci-fi and probably some other books, give them grades and tell you wether it's worth to read or not. And I'm not only going to take a look on new books, but I will also take a look at old books as well, giving my impressions on both new and coming titles as well as titles going back to Lovecraft and maybe even further behind.

So before I start giving you book reviews, I will make sure you know what kind of authors I like, though I can guarantee you that I will listen to you if you want a opinion on a book before you read, or want to see another person's opinion.

My current favourites are:

  • Stephen King
  • Robert Jordan
  • Dan Brown
  • Stephen King
  • Tolkien
  • Terry Goodkind
  • Stephen King.
  • And of course more.

In addition I will try and keep all information about anything I post as easily obtainable as possible. Wikis, information about authors, and maybe even stores will probably be available in each post in the future.

So I wish you all welcome to my blog. I will do my best to keep it updated enough to keep readers interested.

Now, I will probably get some sleep before I hopefully can give you the first recommendation tommorow (I'm starting with my favourite series, you can all guess which).

Wish me luck ;)
